James Kaufmann is a freelance writer and artist living in Iowa City. He has written for The American Scholar, the New York Times Book Review, Afterimage, Camera Arts, and many other national publications, and is a coauthor of A Pictorial History of The University of Iowa, published in 1988 by The University of Iowa Press. In 1990 he was a Finalist for the Citation for Excellence in Reviewing awarded annually by the National Book Critics Circle. He has recently started a Drawing Club at Herbert Hoover Elementary School in Iowa City, and he is guest curator of a show ("Cut and Paste") of 15 collage artists from across North America that will open at TAG Art Gallery in Nashville, TN, in March 2007.
