After moving to Iowa City in 1977  she earned an MA in Painting from the University of Iowa in 1980 and an MFA in 1981. Brown's current pieces are large limited edition digital pigment prints produced by combining scanned images and photographs. She is represented locally by The Chait Galleries Downtown.

About her work, Sara writes, "I have always been drawn to natural objects, shapes and forms. I have recently been focusing on the sensation of the objects quietly emerging from the shadows, catching the light and creating an intimate space."
