Iowa Writes

SHARALYN PLILER
To a Young Waiter

to your well-dressed table
I come, a tired crone,

my mind full of lists,
costs, the ticking clock;

but your eyes twinkle
at the timeless She.

I sigh, smiling, startled awake,
Eyes downcast seeing that you know

what, worn with cares,
I have forgotten, that

shy as maidens, eternal virgins,
Venus breathes us ever new.

The clock has not stopped, but now
your round cups of tea and soup

fit into my palms
like warming stones
