Edge of Day - Palm II

Watercolor Week

All this week the Daily Palette will be celebrating some of our favorite watercolor artists from across the state.

JOHN KLOPP
Edge of Day - Palm II, watercolor, 3" x 5", 2009

John Stephen Klopp has been painting for over 35 years. He has concentrated his efforts on landscapes and farm settings of Iowa and the surrounding Upper Mississippi Valley region. His subject matter more recently includes locations in Colorado and Northeastern New Mexico around the Taos and Pecos areas.

The native Iowan initially studied painting in the late sixties and early seventies at Centenary College of Louisiana under William McNamara. Much of his work reflects a contemporary American realism in a regionalist spirit influenced by Marvin Cone, early works of Grant Wood, and the Pennsylvanian expressionist genre of Daniel Garber.

Klopp produces work in watercolors and oils and is currently represented by a number of galleries, including The Chait Galleries, Iowa City; Catiri's Art Oasis, the Amana Colonies; and Wiederspan Gallery in Cedar Rapids. His paintings can be found in corporate collections throughout the Midwest as well as private collections ranging from the United States to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

John Klopp writes about his work, "I try to find the calm and quiet of the countryside - it is very appealing to me - so much so that we live there in a home nestled on a scenic ridge, the 'Paha', between Mount Vernon and Springville, Iowa.

The landscapes I paint are of the kind I see every day. They are detailed and realistic in contemporary manner. I try to convey a familiarity of place, enhanced by a quality of light, which comes only during the day's transitions, the glow that foretells dusk and dawn.

I like to think my paintings remind us of a slower time - that capture and preserve fleeting memories - scenes in which you want to stroll across the hillside to enjoy the view from the other side.

This particular work is from a series of miniature watercolors produced in this format, depicting a neighbors farm just North of Mount Vernon."
