Iowa Writes

Round and round and round
flies the busy Second Hand.
He whirls—we pause to gaze—and only praise
his speed at four fifty-nine on sluggish days,
when habit kicks in and
five o'clock hunger pounds.

The Hour Hand labors her way—
like a burly ship
trudging through its course—
or a poor, old horse
plodding in the mud. She cannot whip
around like that Second Hand can all day.

But she is great
at planning her pace.
The patient Hour
worries she will snub the sweet flowers
if she bustles. She will always arrive at her next place—
Time can pull her weight.
