About The Daily Palette

The Daily Palette is a project of Intermedia and the Virtual Writing University Expermental Wing. Its goal is to heighten interest, awareness and appreciation of the arts and literature by highlighting the efforts of Iowa-identified artists and writers. For over six years the 'Palette' has provided a means for the public to view a diverse range of creative work through the daily display of images, texts, and multimedia.

The project began in conjunction with the Year of the Arts & Humanities in 2004-2005, when a team from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences School of Art and Art History Intermedia Area developed The Daily Palette to combine Intermedia's art and technology research with a broad public information effort.

The Daily Palette is made possible with the help and support of University Webmaster Josh Kaine, ITS, the Office of the Provost, the Graduate College, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates, the School of Art and Art History, the Iowa Review, and the invaluable contributions of Iowa artists, curators, gallerists, editors and writers.

The Daily Palette features subcollections in collaboration with other organizations throughout The University of Iowa and the state:

"Iowa at 30 Frames per Second"  Highlighting the efforts of Iowa's video artists, "Iowa at 30 Frames per Second" features work streamed direct to your computer. The link below the thumbnail will launch a streaming video.

"Iowa On Stage"  The Daily Palette is pleased to present "Iowa On Stage," showcasing the contributions of the actors, directors, writers, and designers of Iowa's theater community.

"Iowa Scores"  The Daily Palette is pleased to present "Iowa Scores," a new feature spotlighting Iowa's musical artists. From classical string-quartets to electronic noise bands, Iowa's musical community is creatively rich and diverse.

"Iowa Vlogs"  The Daily Palette is pleased to feature "Iowa Vlogs," a new category designed to spotlight the video blog, an emerging media type. Traditional blogs (short for web log) provide online commentary, news, or personal journals. Vlogs expand this use to include time-based videos and media. Clicking on the still will take you to the featured artist's personal vlog.

"Iowa Women Artists Oral History Project"  The Iowa Women Artists Oral History Project records and preserves the voices of women
visual artists in Iowa reflecting on their lives and their artwork. In 1998, creator and director Jane Robinette began interviewing Iowa women artists about their experiences and art practices. The interviews cover family and personal history, education, development as an artist, artwork, creative process, influences, and more. The Daily Palette is pleased to present excerpts of the Iowa Women Artists Oral History Project's 2008 updates that Robinette collected from the Project artists who were interviewed nine or ten years ago. Visit the Iowa Women Artists Oral History Project's website.

"Iowa Writes"  Since 2006, "Iowa Writes" has featured the work of Iowa-identified writers on The Daily Palette, and it has recently expanded its scope to include work published by Iowa journals and publishers. Curated by the staff of The Iowa Review, "Iowa Writes" features poetry, fiction, or nonfiction several times a week on the Palette.
In November of 2008, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Iowa City, Iowa, the world's third City of Literature, making the community part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
Iowa City has joined Edinburgh, Scotland and Melbourne, Australia as UNESCO Cities of Literature.

"Iowa Writes with Audio"  "Iowa Writes" is a two-year project showcasing the writing of Iowans as part of the university-wide Year of Public Engagement. "Iowa Writes with Audio' includes the artist's work read in their own voice. You may play the audio selections below.

"The Graduate Archive"  For the past seventy-five years the School of Art and Art History has collected thousands of artworks by artists attending the School's graduate studio programs. Each graduate student was required to leave behind a work they completed during their graduate studies here at the University of Iowa. The collection contains over 6,000 paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and other art objects. The collection is unique in the country and provides a critical glimpse of academic American art over much of the last century.
